Granite Falls aims to repeat as Emerald Sound champions against King's, a victory that would secure a postseason host advantage.

Granite Falls High School football faces King's on Friday in a contest that determines the Emerald Sound 1A conference title. The Tigers currently hold the No. 8 seed in the 1A RPI Rankings, while the Knights occupy the No. 14 spot. A win for Granite Falls would position the team to host its Week 10 winner-to-state opponent.
The team enters the matchup after a six-game winning streak. That run followed a 0-2 start, during which the Tigers allowed more than 40 points in each game. Over the subsequent six contests, the defense yielded only 47 points while the offense scored 226. Coach Brandon Davis noted that the squad's performance has changed markedly since the season opened on Sept. 4.
The transformation began with a five-day trip to Hawaii. The Kaylee Scholarship Association organized the travel, allowing the team to play Nanakuli High School on Oahu. The Tigers lost that game 41-10 but visited Pearl Harbor and attended a luau. Davis said the experience helped players bond, particularly those with Pacific Island heritage, and created a family atmosphere that persisted through the early losses.
Senior Jaxx Goldsmith said the group set a new standard for the program. He stated, "We're going for big. We're going for playoff runs. We're going for those conference championships." The team's momentum accelerated after a 26-0 victory over Lakeside on Sept. 25. That win followed a shift in defensive mentality, where players adopted a "bend don't break" approach to avoid negative body language after opponent scores.
Running back Beau Everson, a two-time First Team All-Conference selection, credited the offensive line and wide receivers for the unit's versatility. He added, "We have a very versatile offense, and we're able to do all of it." The team's experience in big games also informs its current confidence. Last year, Granite Falls defeated King's 20-14 after trailing by 14 points, ending the Knights' six-year conference title streak.
Davis acknowledged the difficulty of the upcoming task. He praised King's coaching staff for maintaining high levels of discipline and play quality. The coach emphasized controlling small details and remaining competitive regardless of the result. He stated, "I'm sure it's going to be a fun game, at least, so that's all we're looking for."
A victory on Friday would likely guarantee Granite Falls a host spot in the subsequent postseason game. A win in Week 10 would send the Tigers to the 1A State tournament for the first time since 2021. That would mark only the second state appearance for the program since 1990. The coaching staff views a home playoff game as a rare opportunity for the school, with Davis estimating it could be the first in three to four decades.
The team's focus remains on the immediate goal of the conference title. Players and coaches agree that securing this championship allows current seniors to achieve their objective while establishing a foundation for future classes. The Tigers plan to compete for the Emerald Sound crown on Friday, aiming to extend their winning streak and secure the home-field advantage for the next round of the playoffs.
