Eagles Offense Averages Under 4 Yards Per Play
Saquon Barkley is active for Monday's game against Dallas, but Philadelphia's attack has been out-gained by 108.3 yards per game this season.

The Philadelphia Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night at Lincoln Financial Field with their offensive production at its lowest point in nearly three decades. The team has averaged fewer than 4.0 yards per play in three straight games, a statistical milestone last achieved in 1999. This inefficiency places the Eagles at the bottom of the league in total yards per game, where opponents have gained 108.3 more yards than Philadelphia.
Running back Saquon Barkley is officially active for the matchup, providing a key return to the lineup. He was listed as questionable with a hamstring injury earlier in the week but progressed from a limited practice participant on Thursday and Friday to a full participant on Saturday. His return offers a potential solution to a ground game that has relied heavily on less effective personnel.
Barkley’s presence changes the statistical output of the rushing attack significantly. He has averaged 5.1 yards per rush on 36 attempts this season. By comparison, the other Eagles running backs have combined for 71 rushes at an average of just 2.8 yards. Last week against the Carolina Panthers, the team used Dameon Pierce on only 12 carries, resulting in 35 yards and a single touchdown.
The Eagles enter this week without their primary quarterback and star wide receiver. Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the remainder of the season after blood clots were found in his lungs. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith has already been ruled out with a hamstring injury. These absences have compounded the struggles of the offensive line and the skill position players behind it.
Barkley has dealt with his own injury woes since the start of the campaign. He suffered a stinger in the Week 2 game against the Tennessee Titans and pulled his hamstring in the first quarter of the Week 4 contest against the Los Angeles Rams. Consequently, he played on fewer than 16% of offensive snaps in half of his appearances. The 2024 Offensive Player of the Year has rushed for 182 yards and zero touchdowns in four games.
Historical trends favor the Eagles in this specific rivalry. Philadelphia has won four straight home games against the Cowboys, a streak tied for the second-longest in team history. The Eagles have also won seven of their past eight primetime games at home. The Cowboys serve as the next opportunity for the Eagles to reverse their recent defensive and offensive trends.
