Joe Mitchell, 29, is running for Congress in Iowa's second district as voters grow disillusioned with the current administration.

Mitchell holds President Trump's endorsement and would join the first class of Gen Z Republicans in the House if he wins. He is part of a small group of young conservative candidates seeking office this fall. Most of their opponents are in safe Democratic districts, while only one Republican candidate is in a reliably red seat.

The candidates are promoting an anti-corruption platform. Mitchell calls for a maximum of six terms in the House and a ban on congressional stock trading. He has rejected donations from corporate PACs. He says Americans under 30 are deeply concerned about their economic security and distrusting of institutions.

Current House members from Generation Z are rare. Maxwell Frost, a 29-year-old Democrat from Florida, is the only one currently serving. Two more candidates are expected to win seats on Tuesday. Michael Alfonso, 26, is favored to win Wisconsin's 7th district. If elected, he will be the first person born in the 2000s to serve in Congress.

Data from Future Caucus shows that only 4% of congressional candidates this cycle are from Generation Z. This group is the least likely of any generation to advance past primary elections. A majority of these young candidates are Democrats. Less than one-third are Republicans. Another 16% are independents or third-party candidates.

Adam Pennings, executive director of Run Gen Z, said the organization is building a bench of young leaders for the future. The group endorsed more than 220 Gen Z and millennial conservative candidates in late October. This includes Mitchell, Alfonso, and Riley Owen, a 28-year-old running in a heavily Democratic district in Utah.

Mitchell describes the future of the Republican Party as an America First party. He believes this approach focuses on how policies help the American people. He notes that Vice President JD Vance and other cabinet members share this view. The definition remains a point of contention within the party, especially regarding the U.S. war with Iran. Mitchell supports the conflict but opposes endless wars.
