The cost of covering basic household expenses has climbed to a level where six-figure earnings no longer ensure financial stability in many parts of the country. A new analysis by SmartAsset, distributed by Stacker on October 31, 2026, calculates the specific annual income required for residents to live comfortably in each state.

The study indicates that a single adult now needs a pre-tax income of at least $80,000 to meet essential living costs in every state. This threshold pushes past the $100,000 mark in nearly half of the 50 states. For households with two working adults and two children, the required income reaches as high as $329,000 annually.

Massachusetts and Hawaii present the highest financial barriers for residents. In Massachusetts, a family of four must earn $329,555 to cover their minimum needs, making it the most expensive state for that household structure. Hawaii ranks as the most expensive state for single adults, where the required income is $129,002.

Montana experienced the steepest increase in required income among all states. The threshold for a single adult in Montana rose by 8.6% from 2025 to 2026, marking the largest year-over-year change in the dataset. New York followed with an 8.4% increase, requiring single adults to earn $124,342.

Mississippi and West Virginia remain the most affordable locations in the study. A family of four in Mississippi needs $187,533 to live comfortably, the lowest figure for that demographic in the nation. Single adults in West Virginia require the least income of any state, at $81,245.

In six states, the income needed to cover basic expenses declined from 2025 to 2026. Tennessee, Maryland, Louisiana, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Texas all saw drops in the required threshold. Tennessee recorded the largest decrease, with the required income for a single adult falling by 1.7%.

SmartAsset derived these figures using data from the MIT Living Wage Calculator. The organization adjusted the MIT figures by applying the 50/30/20 budgeting rule. Under this framework, 50% of income covers necessities such as housing and utilities, 30% goes to discretionary spending, and 20% is allocated for savings and emergency funds.

The MIT data was last updated in February 2026 to reflect the most recent available economic information. The study compares 2026 estimates against 2025 data to calculate year-over-year changes. The resulting figures represent the annual pre-tax income necessary to maintain a baseline standard of living in each state.
