Retailers in Frankfurt faced property damage late Saturday when riots erupted in the city center, disrupting businesses that had remained open during the day. Police confirmed that windows of several shops were smashed and that two weapons were seized following the arrest of a suspect at a gun shop.

The violence followed mass demonstrations organized by the campaign group Gen Z regelt. Thousands of participants marched earlier in the day to protest high living costs, public spending cuts, underfunded schools, and mandatory military service. Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin authorities estimated the crowd size at 18,000, which was approximately half of the figure projected on the organizers' website.

Conditions remained largely peaceful until nightfall. As darkness set in, clashes broke out in Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg. Police in these cities deployed water cannon to disperse groups that targeted emergency workers with fireworks, stones, and bottles.

Lina Friedrich, a spokesperson for Gen Z regelt, stated that the group aimed to fight for peace and freedom rather than war and coercion. She emphasized that the movement seeks better support for health and education systems and opposes compulsory military service. Friedrich also called for a fairer distribution of the financial burden.

Frankfurt police described the nighttime events as violent riots on the social platform X. They reported that molotov cocktails were thrown at emergency services and that shop windows were broken in the city center. The disorder mirrored recent youth-led protests in France, where more than 320,000 people demonstrated on the same day.

Roman Poseck, the interior minister for Hesse state, identified the disruptors. He stated that around 100 clearly identified left-wing extremists infiltrated the Frankfurt protest. Poseck called the outcome shameful and warned against using France as a model for the demonstrations.

The incidents occurred on November 1, 2026. The protests marked a continuation of cross-border unrest among young voters demanding structural changes to public finances and defense policy.
