Oregon Football: Injury Storm Meets Late Surge
The Ducks overcame the loss of two starting running backs and a coaching change to defeat Northwestern 34-26.

Thirty-six offensive yards were the difference in Oregon’s 34-26 victory over Northwestern on Saturday afternoon. The Ducks secured the win despite a season defined by adversity, including the season-ending injury to starting quarterback Dante Moore in just his fourth game. This latest loss of personnel tested the squad's resilience as they fought for pride in a season where they have little else to play for.
The injury column swelled in the first half. Starting running backs Jordon Davison and Dierre Hill both left the game with injuries and did not return for the second half. Davison sustained a leg injury on an awkward tackle in the second quarter and was seen returning to the field on crutches in street clothes. Receiver Dakorian Moore also exited the game late in the fourth quarter, though details of his injury remain unreported. The absence of the veteran backs forced true freshman Brandon Smith and redshirt freshman Da’Jaun Riggs to carry the ground game. Smith finished with 82 rushing yards, 32 receiving yards, and one touchdown.
The offense found its rhythm after a sluggish start. Following only field goals in early drives, the Ducks scored 28 points and accumulated 360 total yards from the final two minutes of the first half until the final horn. This surge occurred after offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer was dismissed. Although the new play-calling staff had not been installed before the game, the unit performed with a level of competence that marked a distinct shift from previous weeks.
Quarterback Dylan Raiola delivered a performance that suggests he is competing for the starting job in the future. Despite a slow first half that yielded 120 passing yards, he finished the game with 336 yards, three touchdown passes, and no interceptions. He pushed the ball down the field with increased aggression, a performance that coaches and observers noted as a noticeable improvement over his recent outings.
Head coach Dan Lanning, in his fifth season at Oregon, displayed visible tension throughout the contest. His exuberant celebration following Dakorian Moore’s 75-yard fourth-quarter touchdown catch resulted in a sideline warning from officials. Lanning has faced mounting pressure since taking the job in 2021, and this win alleviated some of the internal and external scrutiny he has endured during a difficult stretch.
The win keeps Oregon’s season alive heading to Columbus next Saturday to face Ohio State. A victory there would reignite questions about losses to UCLA and Illinois. The coaching staff’s decision to retain the first-year playcaller until Week 9 remains a point of debate among fans, but the result on the field provided a temporary reprieve from the narrative.
Oregon will travel to Ohio State’s home stadium for the next matchup. The Ducks enter that game with a new offensive identity and a quarterback who is gaining confidence, but they also face the challenge of managing an injury-plagued roster.
