The race to build the definitive AI assistant has intensified, with a new contender entering the fray with a specific focus on professional productivity. Anthropic has launched Claude Duet, an app designed to help professionals and small businesses manage their workflows. This move places the company in direct competition with a growing list of rivals, including Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo. The market is currently saturated with new personal and productivity-based assistants launching almost weekly, but Anthropic believes its new agent can carve out a distinct niche.

Anthropic is drawing a clear line between Duet and the wave of personal agents currently available. The company notes that Duet is not designed to handle simple errands, such as booking tickets or browsing the web in real time. Instead, the tool is built for the demands of the workplace. It aims to automate complex tasks and manage project data for users who need reliable, background processing for their business operations.

The core functionality of Duet centers on creating daily briefings, building custom dashboards, and suggesting actions based on user data. Like other leading agents, Duet operates through its own virtual machine. This allows it to complete tasks in the background while the user focuses on other work. The agent will only interrupt the user when it requires specific approval or input to proceed.

This launch coincides with a broader shift in the AI industry. The focus is moving from simple chatbots to autonomous agents that can act on behalf of users. Many of Anthropic's competitors are already pivoting toward business use cases. Meta, for example, offers a personal assistant but has also released a version tailored for small businesses with app integrations. Similarly, OpenAI’s Dots has a strong business orientation, featuring deep integration with professional tools.

Duet is built on the Claude Opus 5.5 model, which powers its proactive recommendation engine. The agent monitors ongoing tasks to deliver timely suggestions. It can connect to more than 6,000 connectors and plugins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive connectivity allows Duet to interact with a wide range of business applications and services.

Financial transactions are a key feature, but with built-in safeguards. Duet can make online purchases on behalf of users using Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay. However, the company states that sensitive steps, particularly payments, require explicit user approval. To maintain strict boundaries, Duet will not trade securities or move money between different bank accounts without specific instructions.

Security is a priority for Anthropic in this new release. The company has introduced a new classifier that checks every message to prevent sensitive information from leaking out. By default, the agent is programmed to turn down requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification. This approach aims to protect user data while still allowing for automated workflows.

Claude Duet is now available to the public in a research preview. It can be accessed as an app on iOS and Android devices, or through the web interface at Claude.ai. The service is currently open to Pro and Max customers. Users interested in trying the new agent must join a waitlist to gain access to the platform.
