Wolves Appear in Villages After Forest Clearing
Google's unauthorized land clearing in Finland has displaced wildlife, pushing animals toward human settlements.

Displacement of wildlife is driving animals out of their natural habitats and into residential areas near Muhos, Finland, after Google cleared land to construct AI data centers. The removal of forest cover has forced animals to relocate, bringing predators and other wildlife into close proximity with local residents.
Google's Finland country manager has apologized for unauthorized clearing that converted 816 acres of forest into mud. Additionally, authorities have ordered a halt to work on approximately 500 acres of forest located 55 miles southeast of Otanmäki. This specific area previously served as the habitat for packs of wolves.
The transformation of this land into a muddy expanse has driven wild animals out of the forest and into nearby villages. Anni Ranta, 53, a resident whose family has lived in Otanmäki for generations, explained that wolves entered the village because all the wild animals moved out of the forest. Ranta also expressed concern regarding the potential for the U.S.-owned data centers to make Finland a target for Russian aggression.
The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation (SLL) has described Google's disregard for environmental policy as unprecedented. Consequently, the Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority (LVV) issued an order instructing Google to stop development near Muhos and Otanmäki. Google responded that it will fully comply with the LVV's requests and hopes to maintain an open dialogue with authorities to strengthen its partnership with Finland.
In addition to the clearing of forest land, residents have reported other issues stemming from the project, including noise from construction and factories, streams turning brown, and rare birds being pushed out of the area. The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority issued a notice earlier this month instructing Google to stop construction activities in Muhos and Kajaani near Otanmäki. Google is proceeding with plans to build AI data centers in Finland despite the regulatory orders and local concerns.
