The New York City Marathon reached its 50th edition on Sunday.
Approximately 60,000 athletes started the 26.2-mile race across the five boroughs. Nearly half of the participants were women. Runners represented more than 140 countries.
Andreas Almgren of Sweden won the men's race in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 1 second. It was his first time competing in the full marathon distance. Almgren pulled away from Yemaneberhan Crippa of Italy during the final mile. Crippa finished 13 seconds behind. Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho took third place, beating defending champion Benson Kipruto.
Almgren's time ranks as the third fastest in the event's history. The top seven finishers all placed within the top 10 all-time records. He became the first runner to win his debut at this event since 2010. American Zouhair Talbi finished sixth. His time marked the fastest ever recorded by a U.S. man in the race.
Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya won the women's race in 2:24:36. This is her second victory in the event, having also won in 2024. She beat countrywoman Hellen Obiri in the final 150 meters. Jessica McClain of the United States finished second, passing Obiri in the closing strides. McClain trailed Chepkirui by six seconds. Her result was the first top-three finish for an American woman since 2018.
The course changed for the first time in 15 years. Organizers altered the route at mile 20 in the Bronx. The new path reduced the number of turns from seven to five. The change aimed to ease street closures in the area.
Marcel Hug won the men's wheelchair race for the eighth time. He beat Daniel Romanchuk by just over one second. Hug passed Romanchuk in the final 100 meters inside Central Park. Catherine Debrunner of Sweden won the women's wheelchair race in 1:40:02. Her time was the second fastest in history. Susannah Scaroni, who gave birth three months ago, finished third in the women's wheelchair division.
