Cardiff and Dragons enter the November international break tied for first place in the United Rugby Championship, each holding 14 points from six matches played. The league is on a one-month pause while the Nations Championship unfolds. Cardiff holds the top spot on win count, having defeated Ospreys 26-0 in Swansea to close out the first block.
The season began with high stakes for all four Welsh franchises. Cardiff’s campaign was uneven, marked by a 29-5 loss to Leinster and a 21-36 defeat to the Sharks. The team responded to those setbacks with strong performances, including a 40-27 win over Zebre. Lock Josh McNally noted the team’s alignment. "The group is in a really good place and everybody is aligned with what we want to do," McNally said.
Dragons also reached the top of the table, avoiding a slip against winless Zebre with a 35-14 victory. Head coach Filo Tiatia expressed satisfaction with the squad's progress despite a thin bench. The team was without 18 players for the Zebre match due to Wales call-ups and injuries. Tiatia emphasized the importance of the upcoming schedule. "The next block is so important and it's five weeks before we hit Edinburgh," Tiatia said.
Ospreys and Scarlets face a different challenge after returning from difficult trips to South Africa. Ospreys lost 26-0 to Cardiff in a local derby, a result that head coach Mark Jones described as a reminder of the level required for victory. The team has rotated widely, giving 35 players a start across the block. Ospreys will host Leinster on December 4, their next home fixture.
Scarlets have improved their play style recently, winning 27-26 against Benetton and 47-14 against Newcastle in the Challenge Cup. Director of rugby Nigel Davies noted the group's growth. "We've started to find our feet a little bit," Davies said. The team has conceded 29 tries, the second most in the league. Scarlets will resume play with a home game against Connacht.
The November break allows all four clubs to recover and prepare for a dense schedule in December. Cardiff will face Bath in the Champions Cup, while the other three teams continue in the Challenge Cup. The pause concludes when the URC resumes following the international window.
Cardiff and Dragons will look to maintain their lead, while Ospreys and Scarlets aim to improve their defensive and offensive consistency. The next block will test the depth of each squad as they face top-tier European and domestic opposition.
