A Topeka man now faces $3 million in bond after a crime spree that left three people stabbed and two homes ransacked. The charges against Adam Schwegman stem from an incident on Wednesday, October 28, that police describe as a series of attacks spanning several blocks.
According to Topeka police, Schwegman was first seen attacking two individuals along S.W. Fillmore Street. His booking charges also include an allegation of rape at that address. He then moved further up the same road, where he broke into two separate residences. Officials confirmed that four children were inside one of the houses, including an infant who was four months old. None of the children were hurt.
The violence continued on a nearby street, where a third victim was stabbed. The sequence ended when Schwegman attacked a 70-year-old woman at Ward Meade Park. He was fleeing the park when a bystander named Ron Hubbard noticed him.
Hubbard said he was spending time with a friend when he saw a stranger acting oddly. They approached Schwegman because another witness had already flagged the man's behavior at the park. Hubbard explained that he decided to intervene by tripping Schwegman, causing the suspect to fall into the grass. The knife slipped from Schwegman's hand and landed in the grass. Hubbard kicked the weapon onto the sidewalk while his companion held the man down. Schwegman escaped the temporary restraint, but officers caught him shortly afterward.
Schwegman made his initial court appearance on Thursday, October 29. A judge set his total bail at $3 million. He is booked on 16 charges, which include aggravated battery and rape. The 16 charges cover the stabbings, the break-ins, and the sexual assault allegation.
Hubbard described the moment he stepped in as a response to a scenario he had previously watched on television. He said he hoped his actions prevented further injury. "Well, if you see something bad, try to help stop it," Hubbard said. "I wish we could have got to it before this happened."
