Peoples Bank has awarded its 2026 annual Impact Grant to Habitat for Humanity of Island County. The $25,000 donation will purchase a new construction truck for the nonprofit.
The bank established the program in 2017 to fund specific projects with long-lasting community benefits. This is the first time the specific award has gone to this organization, which serves residents on Whidbey and Camano Islands.
Habitat for Humanity of Island County will use the funds to buy a reliable vehicle. A repair specialist will drive the truck daily to transport tools, equipment, and building materials. The vehicle supports the organization's affordable home repair and construction programs.
Orin Kolaitis, the chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity of Island County, stated that the investment strengthens their capacity to serve local families. He noted that the vehicle allows staff to efficiently reach homeowners while restoring essential Habitat Store operations. Kolaitis said the grant helps preserve affordable housing and keeps neighbors safely housed.
Lisa Hefter, the chief operating officer at Peoples Bank, described the grant as a practical solution for local families. She highlighted the nonprofit's track record in helping residents maintain safe housing and create pathways to homeownership. Hefter expressed pride in supporting an investment that will strengthen the organization's ability to serve the community.
Peoples Bank is a locally owned, independent community bank headquartered in Bellingham, Washington. The institution holds $2.4 billion in assets and operates 23 locations throughout the state. It has served the region for 100 years and received a five-star rating from BauerFinancial.
Alongside the Impact Grant, the bank is accepting votes for its separate $10,000 Peoples Choice Grant. Nine additional applicants are in the running for that award. Community members can vote online until midnight on October 23, 2026.
