Alaska Air Group announced Friday that it is eliminating 200 positions within its non-contract workforce.

The company stated that the decision stems from a difficult operating environment, specifically citing unpredictable fuel costs and broader geopolitical pressures. In a statement, Alaska Air Group expressed gratitude for the contributions of the affected employees and their families, while noting a commitment to supporting staff through the transition.

The cuts are part of a wider financial adjustment for the carrier. Earlier this week, Reuters reported that Alaska Air Group projected a fourth-quarter adjusted loss of $2 to $2.50 per share. This forecast exceeded market estimates, which had anticipated a loss of $1.04 per share based on LSEG data.

The layoffs will affect operations primarily in the Pacific Northwest. Of the 200 individuals selected for the reduction, 125 are based in Washington state. The remaining positions are located in other regions where the airline maintains offices.

The company has not yet specified the exact timeline for the departures or the specific departments impacted beyond the non-contract designation. Management will continue to evaluate operational costs in the coming weeks to address the projected quarterly deficit.
